A web of webmail: trick Petraeus and his lover used to conceal their messages

Former CIA Director David Petraeus and his biographer Paula Broadwell used a trick known to terrorists and teenagers alike to conceal their email traffic to each other, a US media report says.

The concealed affair between the pair has led to an investigation by the FBI and the resignation of Petraeus from his country's top spy post.

New details of the investigation that brought an end to Petraeus's storied career have emerged, as US lawmakers demanded to know why President Barack Obama was not informed for several months that his CIA chief was under investigation and as the President hunted for a new CIA director.

The FBI agent who launched the investigation into the harassing emails was also reportedly under scrutiny following his superiors' fears he had become personally involved in the case, including allegedly sending shirtless images of himself to the woman who received the emails,The Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday, citing anonymous officials.

The FBI had found that Petraeus and Broadwell did not send emails to their Gmail account inboxes. Instead, they composed messages and rather transmitting them, left them in a draft folder or an electronic "dropbox", a federal law enforcement official told The Associated Press.

The other person could log on to the same account and read the draft emails there, avoiding the creation of an email trail that is easier to trace.

Email exchanges

The FBI was first drawn to Broadwell after Tampa socialite Jill Kelley, who revealed she was a longtime friend of Petraeus, said she began receiving harassing emails in May, a federal law enforcement official told AP.

The emails led Kelley to report the matter. FBI agents traced the alleged cyber harassment to Broadwell, the officials said, and discovered she was exchanging intimate messages with a private Gmail account. Further investigation revealed the account belonged to Petraeus under an alias.

Broadwell had co-authored a biography titled All In: The Education of General David Petraeus, published in January. In the preface, she said she met Petraeus in the spring of 2006 while she was a graduate student at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard and she ended up following him on multiple trips to Afghanistan as part of her research.

But the contents of the email exchanges between Petraeus and Broadwell suggested to FBI agents that their relationship was intimate. The FBI concluded relatively quickly - by late summer at the latest - that no security breach had occurred, the two officials said. But the FBI continued its investigation into whether Petraeus had any role in the harassing emails.

'Not jealous lover warning emails'

Newsweek's The Daily Beast cited a source in a story published on Tuesday saying that the emails to Kelley were not of the "stay away from my man" variety.

Instead, they were "kind of cat-fight stuff", the sources said. "More like, 'Who do you think you are? … You parade around the base … You need to take it down a notch.'"

The source said Kelley did not know who the emails were from and what they were about.

"I don't know who this person is and I don't want to keep getting them," the source said she told the FBI.

"No 'I'll kill you' or 'I'll burn your house down'. It doesn't seem really that bad," the source told theDaily Beast.

"[The FBI] weren't seeing this as the crime of the century."

Broadwell's father, Paul Krantz, told the New York Daily News on Saturday that the scandal was "about something else entirely, and the truth will come out".

"You wait and see. There's a lot more here than meets the eye," he claimed.

Shirtless photos sent to Kelley by FBI agent

At the same time, the FBI agent who started the investigation was barred from taking part in the Petraeus case after he launched it when his bosses become concerned he had become obsessed with the case, the unnamed officials told the Journal.

The FBI officials reportedly found out that the agent, who they did not name, sent shirtless photographs of himself to Kelley.

The agent then contacted a member of Congress after being barred from the case, apparently due to fears the FBI would bury it, the officials said. The agent suspected a cover-up to protect President Obama, because of his "world view", another official told The New York Times.

Sensitive Afghan documents on Broadwell computer

Petraeus, 60, told one former associate he began an affair with Broadwell, 40, a couple of months after he became the director of the CIA late last year. They mutually agreed to end the affair four months ago, but they kept in contact because she was still writing a dissertation on his time commanding US troops overseas, the associate said.

FBI agents contacted Petraeus, who led US military efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan, and he was told that sensitive, possibly classified documents related to Afghanistan were found on her computer. He assured investigators they did not come from him, and he mused to his associates that they were probably given to her on her reporting trips to Afghanistan by commanders she visited in the field there. The FBI concluded there was no security breach.

One associate also said Petraeus believes the documents described past operations and had already been declassified, although they might have still been marked as "secret". Broadwell had high security clearances on her own as part of her job as a reserve army major working for military intelligence. But those clearances are only in effect when a soldier is on active duty, which she was not at the time she researched the Petraeus biography.

Broadwell's CIA Benghazi claims

During a talk last month at the University of Denver, Broadwell raised eyebrows when she said the CIA had detained people at a secret facility in Benghazi, Libya, and the September 11 attack on the US Consulate and CIA base there was an effort to free those prisoners.

Obama issued an executive order in January 2009 stripping the CIA of its authority to take prisoners. The move meant the CIA was forbidden from operating secret jails across the globe as it had under President George W. Bush.

CIA spokesman Preston Golson said: "Any suggestion that the agency is still in the detention business is uninformed and baseless."

Broadwell did not say who told her about CIA activities in Libya. The video of Broadwell's speech was posted on YouTube by the University of Denver. It was removed from YouTube by the university on Monday after an internal review but reposted later with a different link, Politicoreported.

Should top spies use webmail?

The use of at least one private Gmail account by Petraeus also prompted some commentators in the US media to ask if public servants in such sensitive positions should be allowed to use webmail while they work for the government.

Foreign Policy magazine said in a blog that "it just seems a little odd that these people with access to incredible secrets use the same email services the rest of us do".

"If hacked, these emails could reveal plenty about the personal lives of their owners. Hackers probably wouldn't find state secrets, but they could find plenty of personal information - travel plans, info about friends and family, online purchases, bank accounts, the list goes on and on.

"As Google knows for business purposes, a look at someone's email can paint a pretty valuable picture of who they are. Google uses this information to sell ads tailored to your interests. You can imagine what spies would do with it."

Petraeus deeply regrets affair: friend

Numerous Petraeus friends and associates have spoken to the media since his resignation, saying that the former director was remorseful about the affair.

"He regrets it on so many levels that I don't think anyone can really imagine how this has affected both his family and himself and, to some degree, the nation," friend and former Petraeus spokesman Steve Boylan, who said he spoke to the former top spy over the weekend, told AFP.

"He regrets the poor judgment and the lack of discipline more than we can probably put into words."

Petraeus informed Holly, his wife of 38 years, before the news broke last week, though Boylan was unaware of exactly how long she may have known about the affair.

"To say she is disappointed and furious would probably be a huge understatement at this point," he said.

Petraeus's senior adviser throughout the US campaign in Iraq, Sadi Othman, told CNN his affair was "uncharacteristic".

"You could tell me anybody else and I would say 'yes', but not him... What happened? I do not know. How? I do not know.

"He's very sad. Very remorseful about what happened - about what he did. His focus now is on his family and to repair the damage that has been done because of this mistake that he made."

Petraeus was 'right' to resign: Panetta

As the FBI criminal investigation into the emails continued, Pentagon chief Leon Panetta told reporters aboard a US military jet bound for Australia on Tuesday that Petraeus "took the right step" in resigning.

Panetta, who led the Central Intelligence Agency for two years before moving to the Defence Department, said it was "a very sad situation to have a very distinguished career like that end in this manner".

"My heart obviously goes out to him and his family. But I think he took the right step.

"I think it's important when you're director of the CIA, with all of the challenges that face you in that position, that personal integrity comes first and foremost."

Asked about complaints from lawmakers that President Barack Obama's White House had failed to inform Congress the FBI was investigating emails between Petraeus and his lover, Panetta admitted those concerns needed to be examined.

"That's another issue I think we ought to look at," said Panetta, who served as a member of the House of Representatives for years, AFP reported.

"As a former director of the CIA, and having worked very closely with the intelligence committees, I believe that there is a responsibility to make sure the intelligence committees are informed of issues that could affect the security of those intelligence operations."

Big Brother plans sneaky trick with 'rival house' twist

THIS is the Big Brother house...no, the other one.

In one of the sneakiest twists in the format's history, host Sonia Kruger will trick the current crop of contestants into thinking they have to compete against a rival house of 14 other hopefuls next week.
The secret housemates, all paid actors, were filmed in a mock-up BB house on the Gold Coast, lazing about, flirting with the cameras and fiddling with their microphones in the same style of the real housemates locked inside the Dreamworld house.
The challenge will be introduced following tomorrow night's eviction on Channel 9, where Bradley, Ben and Ryan are all vying to stay in the competition.
Executive producer Alex Mavroidakis revealed the mind game had been in the planning since Christmas, with BB task producers "leaking'' details of the second house and fake contestants onto fan forums and spoiler websites.
"If we can pull it off, it will be the best week of television in the history of Big Brother,'' he said.
Only one contestant, Estelle, was given a hint of the possibility of a second house, with audio about the second house deliberately fed through her headphones as she waited to be sent on stage to meet Kruger then placed inside the real house for the first time.
Mavroidakis said housemates Michael and Ben, both with high IQs, posed the greatest risk to the trick unravelling, if their cynicism rubbed off on other housemates.
Meanwhile, intruders could be the next twist to this year's competition as producers try to keep up the drama and the ratings.

About to bust? What's with the mining boom?

Here's why everyone is saying the Mining Boom is over

THERE is talk that the great Australian mining boom - which has helped the country avoid recession for 21 years - is over.

Resource Minister Martin Ferguson said last week that "anyone with half a brain" knows the resources boom is over. Deutsche Bank warned of the end of the investment boom and even a recession in 2013.
On the flip side, a NAB report predicts the resources investment boom isn’t over and will continue until 2013-2014 and perhaps will not peak until 2015. And, last week Reserve Bank governor Glenn Stevens took the "glass half full" outlook and said he sees no sign the boom is over.

It’s over, it’s not over, it’s over….
Here's a breakdown of what's happening:
The Iron ore bubble
As far as bubbles go – this is one of the biggest and it looks like it’s about to burst.

The price of iron ore has increased tenfold over the past 10 years and it's Australia’s biggest export. But the price of the steel making ingredient has fallen 30 per cent in the past two months. Yesterday, iron ore prices hit a two-year low, nosediving $US4.50 to $US90.30 per tonne.

If the price doesn’t pick up the collapse threatens to put a big dent in Government revenues (to the tune of $10 billion) and mining incomes. Some analysts are saying the price won’t pick up any time soon. Others are optimistic however such as Fortescue Metals chief Neville Power who yesterday said he believes the price will go back up to $US120 a tonne – a mark for when Chinese production is profitable again.

So, we need China to step up spending on power, water, rail and road infrastructure programs.

It all hinges on China

We’ve heard it before, but it all really does hinge on China.

Twenty-five per cent of Australia’s exports go to China and 60 per cent of these shipments are iron ore. It’s shipped over to China’s steel makers for industrial expansion, the 90 million houses it has built over the past 15 years and other infrastructure.

If China’s demand for steel falls – which data seems to show it has – Australia is left massively exposed. As it stands in China there are more than two million unsold homes and an estimated 30 million under construction signalling China’s iron-ore imports are going to slow down dramatically.

According to this morning’s AFR, China’s biggest steel makers are also planning to shut unprofitable capacity permanently over the second half of 2012.

Investors are nervous…and shelving massive projects doesn’t help
Big alarm bells sounded last week when BHP scrapped $20 billion plans to expand the Olympic Dam, blaming soaring development costs, a high Australian dollar and falling commodity prices. Expansion of Woodside Petroleum's $15 billion Pluto project in Western Australia is also on hold.

Investors are getting nervous. They’re worried the drop in iron ore prices will stop the big miners such as Fortescue Metal being able to pay off its $6 billion debt.

Rio Tinto shares fell yesterday below $50 for the first time since 2009.

Atlas Iron plunged more than 5 per cent.

Drilling contractor Boart Longyear shares dived by more than a whopping 33 per cent yesterday after it slashed its full-year profit forecast, blaming an expected slowdown in global mining activity.

In response to pressure from shareholders worried about poor returns in the weak global markets, miners have put the brakes on capital spending.

On the bright side
Official figures out yesterday showed the capital expenditure, which is a big indicator of the strength of the mining boom, is still very strong.

Australian Bureau of Statistics said it expected $119 billion to be invested in mining capital expenditure this year, representing the bulk of an estimated $181.5 billion of investment across the economy.

But Deutsche Bank warns of over-confidence that the investment pipeline is “locked-in”.

The rise and fall of the Dollar
The resources boom has fuelled the two-speed economy pumping up the dollar and in turn hurting manufacturing and retail.

If the boom is over analysts say we’ll see a rebalancing in the economy with other sectors such as retail, manufacturing, tourism seeing a bit of recovery as the resources sector contributes less.

And if it is over…
As history shows after many booms comes a recession. Deutsche Bank analysts are the pessimists predicting a recession for Australia in 2015. But local bank NAB says it’s unlikely that the recent fall in commodity prices will continue and expects prices to level out about now and to rise gradually ahead. Another recent report from BIS Shrapnel says mining investment will not peak until 2014.

Furthermore, resources projects in the pipeline do not peak out potentially until 2015. Planned expenditure on these projects is immense and will drive the overall economy’s growth path ahead. NAB says “those calling the end of the resources boom are likely to be pleasantly disappointed.”

According to a report released by Variant Perception Australia: The Unlucky Country, Australia is a classic dutch disease example where the economy is totally bent out of shape distorted by one sector - similar to Ireland's "Celtic Tiger" with their construction boom.

The report states that Australia will face a run on its currency, a deeper collapse in housing prices and a bank funding crisis as it attempts to come to grips with life after the mining boom.

Tsunami alert after 7.6-quake hits Philippines save

QUAKE strikes east of the Philippines, triggering tsunami warnings across the region. There is no threat to Australia

A 7.6-MAGNITUDE quake struck off the eastern coast of the Philippines, killing at least one person, knocking out power in several towns and generating negligible tsunami surges.

The quake struck at a depth of 34 kilometres in the Pacific Ocean about 140 kilometres from the Philippines, leading to tsunami warnings across its east coast and as far away as Indonesia, Japan and Papua New Guinea.
A series of small waves ranging from 16-centimetres to 50 centimetres hit the eastern Philippines about two hours after the quake, according to local authorities, but there were no reports of major damage.
The US Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre shortly afterwards lifted its tsunami warnings for the Philippines and Indonesia. It had earlier cancelled similar warnings for Japan, Taiwan and several Pacific islands.
The warnings led to a burst of terror for residents along the east coast of the Philippines, many of whom were without electricity because power lines had been cut during the earthquake that hit at 8:47pm (10:47pm AEST).

Leticia Amos, 35, a government employee, said hundreds of families on Samar island rushed to a hillside area, carrying their belongings as soon as the alert was raised.
"It is very dark, there is no electricity and everyone is panicking," she said.
"Our place is on a hilly portion along the highway, and hundreds of people from low lying bayside areas rushed here."
The quake shook large areas of the east, and one person was confirmed killed when a landslide engulfed her home in Cagayan de Oro City.
"There's a 60-year-old woman who died and a five-year-old girl who was injured. There was a small landslide," civil defence chief Benito Ramos said on DZMM radio.
"The quake occurred amid strong rain, so the earth shook loose and there was a landslide."
Paula Daza, the governor of northern Samar province, one of the areas closest to where the quake struck, said there were reports of damage to infrastructure.
"Some cracks appeared on concrete roads, and at the base of at least one bridge," he said.
Sol Matugas, the governor of another eastern region, Surigao del Norte, said on DZMM radio that the quake had severely shaken homes.
"We were rather frightened. For the first time, we saw objects falling out of our cabinets," he said.
The USGS had initially reported the quake as having a magnitude of 7.9, but revised it to 7.6

AGFA was the abbreviation for Aktien-Gesellschaft für Anilin-Fabrikation, given in 1873 to a company that had been founded in Berlin in 1867. It produced chemicals for photography. Most famous is the film developer Rodinal, introduced in 1892 and continued for 115 years. When Agfa obtained the Rietzschel camera works in Munich from Bayer in 1925, it badged all Rietzschel products with its Agfa rhombus. In 1926 it introduced the first real Agfa camera, the Standard. In 1927 the name Rietzschel disappeared from the products. In that year the successful Billy camera series was introduced, and Agfa licensed Ansco to manufacture its products for the American market.
In 1930 the first Agfa Box camera for 6×9 cm exposures on roll film was produced. In the following year it popularized photography in Germany by dumping the Box 44 for 4 Reichsmark, easily recouping its losses afterwards by selling Agfa 120 roll films. In 1937 it brought out its first camera for 35mm film.
After WWII Agfa improved its prewar models and introduced the new 35mm Solinette. In 1954 it modernized its camera design with the Silette series; 1956 saw the introduction of the medium format Automatic 66. In 1959 a 35mm viewfinder camera with autoexposure button followed, the Optima. In 1964 Agfa introduced the Rapid system as an answer to Kodak's 126 film. The company debuted cameras accepting 126 film in 1967.
In 1968 Agfa introduced its red sensor point, a round membrane made of red foil and framed with a metal ring. Depending on the camera type, either a mechanical or an electromechanical shutter release button was hidden under the flexible membrane. Since then this touchpad-like shutter button was used on most of the company's models and became a familiar feature.
In Germany Agfa had a huge success with its popular "Ritsch-Ratsch" pocket cameras, which accepted 110 cartridge film. A whole series of these Agfamatic cameras was launched twice, the first series using magicubes and the second, flipflash. Of course these cameras had the red sensor point as shutter release button.
In the early 1980s Agfa produced its last film cameras. The new models of the Selectronic series were manufactured by Chinon. Agfa gave up camera production in 1983. All later Agfa film cameras were OEM products.

LA Galaxy 4 - PR Islanders 0 ....was that a match!?

The LA Galaxy trotted out a lineup last night heavy on the youngun's and were rewarded with a 4-0 victory. Two teenage forwards accounted for half the scoring, while a 2012 Superdraft pick scored the opener. So which Galaxy youngster had the best performance last night?
By Match Impact Rating it was Jose Villarreal with 107.4 narrowly edging out Jack McBean with 100.3. In some ways, Villarreal's impact is more pronounced because he didn't make it past the forth-sixth minute. In the stats he looks more like a super halftime sub than someone who was in the starting lineup.
Which isn't to discredit what he did do. Villarreal took Jack McBean's flick on header from the midway line, dribbled it past the goalkeeper with a defender hanging on him, and got just enough on the ball to roll it into the net as he was falling down, taking a boot to the back of the head for his troubles.
Still, McBean's performance over a whole match is more impressive to me despite the lower MIR. McBean had the assist on Villarreal's goal, but also contributed a goal of his own in the 80'. He corralled a Michael Stephens cross, and though his first attempt was blocked, he stayed with the ball to take a second shot to put the Galaxy up 3-0. McBean also won two fouls in the offensive half.
The rest of the kids show up with solid performances, though nowhere near the level the two teenage forwards had. Michael Stephens comes in at 55.5. He had the Galaxy's fourth goal less than two minutes after McBean's goal. Had he gotten the assist on McBean's goal his score would have been considerably higher.
Tommy Meyer came in right behind at 54.75. Since MIR is an offense only stat, that's based almost purely on his opening headed goal. Kenny Walker registered at 49.25, winning two fouls.
Edson Buddle made his first comeback appearance after surgery last night, playing 19 mins. It's going to be a long road back to playing form however, as Buddle lost the ball three times and committed three fouls in those minutes. Hopefully that can just be chalked up to rust, but that rust will need to be shaken before he looks like he belongs.

The judges were especially critical of some of the other performers song choice, but LOVE hit the right balance.
Clare will be attending the Newtown High School of Performing Arts, and she has surely proven that she is up the the challenges of the year ahead with wonderful stage presence and excellent pitch. The audience were surely the winners that night.

Agfa Graphics takes its production automation expertise to the cloud with :Arkitex Eversify, a SaaS (Software as a Service) solution designed specifically for newspapers that are looking for a straightforward way to enter the new world of mobile digital publishing without increasing production costs while still providing a rich reading experience..

Nicole Kidman to lead health supplement company Swisse's world push

NICOLE Kidman has signed on as global brand ambassador to an Australian company with ambitious plans to roll the business out around the world in 2013.

Melbourne-based vitamin and health supplement company Swisse has signed the Academy Award winning actress to what is understood to be a multi-million dollar three-year deal that will see her promote their "wellness" products to the US, UK, Europe and Asia.
It is believed to be the first time the 45-year-old actress has signed a contract to endorse an Australian brand after previously spruiking for Chanel No. 5, premium watch brand Omega and the United Nations Women.
Following months of negotiation with Swisse CEO Radek Sali, Kidman signed with the company in May and, on her return to Sydney in June, shot a series of glamorous promotional images in a Rose Bay backyard.
In early 2013 she will shoot a TV commercial for international distribution as part of the company's international marketing strategy.
Kidman said she was "excited to be part of the growth of a small Australian family-built company dedicated to good health and well being".
"I love feeling healthy and fit. They are wonderful attributes of the Australian way of life and I am a very proud Australian," she said.
Kidman joins Swisse's long list of celebrity brand ambassadors, including Formula One driver Mark Webber, Ricky Ponting and Sonia Kruger.
Swisse was founded in the 1960s by businessman Kevin Ring and is today owned by Mr Ring's son Stephen and two associates - the company's CEO Mr Sali and former CEO Michael Saba.
The company has been enjoying a period of rapid growth partly due to a savvy mass-market strategy employed since 2009 and said to cost the company $50 million a year. In the past three years the company's sales have increased by 350 per cent to $170 million.
Mr Sali said he was "thrilled" about the new celebrity association.
"Nicole Kidman is a much loved Australian face overseas and we know Swisse will be Australia's most loved health and wellness brand overseas in coming months and years," he said.

Facebook co-founder Dustin Moskovitz sells 450,000 shares

FACEBOOK co-founder Dustin Moskovitz is shedding another 450,000 company shares for a take of about $US8.7 million ($8.4 million).

Mr Moskovitz has been selling 150,000 shares a day and disclosing the sales every three days. Including the most recent sale, he still holds more than 130 million shares.
The latest filing, made late Wednesday, covered sales from Monday to Wednesday. He sold shares at prices ranging from $US19 to $US19.49.
Shares of Facebook, based in Menlo Park, California, have been in steep decline since debuting at $US38 each in May. Shares hit a new low last week and haven't traded above $US20 in two weeks.
Mr Moskovitz, 28, was Mark Zuckerberg's Harvard roommate when they founded Facebook in 2004. He left the company in 2008 and started the software company Asana.

Women are biggest spenders online

FASHION-conscious women are spending online at almost twice the pace of men.

Busy consumers hunting cheaper prices and greater convenience are driving an almost 25 per cent rise in online retailing to $11.7 billion in the past year, National Australia Bank research says.
The data shows online spending is growing faster than the traditional bricks-and-mortar sales, with the time-poor 30-40 age group the biggest spenders.
The Australian online shopping boom is set to double to almost $27 billion within four years, PricewaterhouseCoopers estimates.
Domestic retailers remain the dominant force, but about one in four purchases is from an international website.

Parramatta Cycling Club's Simone Kennedy clinched second overall in the women's individual C1-2-3 pursuit in 4:24.893, almost four seconds behind China's recently crowned world record holder Zeng Sini.
Kennedy, a C3 rider with cerebral palsy, progressed to the gold medal race-off after going through second fastest with a qualifying time of 4:23.450.
Kennedy entered the London Games as the reigning world champion in the event after capturing the title earlier this year.
The Australian rode a gutsy race against an opponent she knew she had to hunt, with Zeng setting a new world record of 4:19.841 in qualifying.
Kennedy rode out hard in an attempt to build an unassailable buffer and at one stage held a lead of two and a half seconds, but the experience and strategy of the Chinese rider proved too great as she had enough in the tank to chase her opponent down.

SINGER-songwriter Jimmy Buffett has revealed he was lucky he didn't kill himself when he tumbled off the stage during a Sydney show.

The US veteran, best known for his hits Margaritaville and Cheeseburger in Paradise, landed badly, cut his head open and was taken to St Vincent's Hospital after falling while trying to shake the hand of a fan and missing the edge of the stage at the Hordern Pavilion show in 2011.
''I just walked off,'' he said.
''I wasn't drunk and whoever I was waving to wasn't that pretty. I was banged up pretty bad and I was very lucky.
''I think what saved me is that I had been surfing a lot the week before and I was in pretty fair shape so I rolled when I hit. If I had gone flat-faced, God knows what would have happened.''
Buffett paid tribute to the emergency ward surgeons who happened to be in the front row at the show and immediately came to his aid, one of whom rode in the ambulance with him.
''I don’t remember going off - I remember waking up when I was in the hands of two great emergency room surgeons. I was very grateful for that.
